Kristene Smuts wrote her name into motorcycle competition history in Mpumalanga South Africa when she became the first woman rider to win the national motorcycle economy run in its 27-year history.

Despite starting the 2009 RFS Bike Econorun eight minutes late due to a flat battery on her BMW 650 CS, the Auto Alpina team rider finished the 950 km event in Hazyview in first place overall and in Class A (motorcycles up to 700cc).

Her success in an event that attracted an entry of 50 riders including several previous winners, all men, more than made up for her misfortune last year, when she fell off her bike on the first corner and had to withdraw.

Second overall and also in Class A was last year’s winner Reg Gurnell on a KTM 690 SMC with another previous winner Peter de la Rey on a BMW F800 ST third overall and first in Class B (for motorcycles from 701 cc to 1010 cc).

The tight economic situation, the fact that the event was held in the middle of winter and a clash with local Motorcycle shows had a negative effect on the entry where normally there would be over 75 entrants.

The event, which is organised by the Pretoria Motor Club, was run over two days, using the picturesque but demanding roads of Mpumalanga, with the finish at the Numbi Hotel in Hazyview.
