Phoenix Project by Woman Rider to Heal Community

Last Update: 15 October 2022

Motoress Called “The Phoenix Project”, Trinia Cuseo, its creator and Eureka California resident is using her passion for motorcycles to give back to her community. Trinia said she started the Phoenix Project, which is raffling off the customised motorcycle (valued at $5,000), is a way to address the methamphetamine problem in Humboldt County. There are 400 raffle tickets, one-third of which have already been sold within the past two weeks, which are $25 each. All proceeds go to the Humboldt County Meth Abuse Awareness Project.

“The Phoenix Project began in February. The reason we’re doing this is because there’s a lot of negativity, and people complaining about the way things are, but not a lot of people are being proactive or positive,” Trinia said. “Even if we’re not social workers, nurses or doctors, we can support people doing good work — and also have fun building a motorcycle.”

Trinia, owner of Hinterland Screen Printing, Apparel and Design and assistant manager at the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe, said she moved her business to a new location a few blocks away from St. Bernard Church on the same day Rev. Eric Freed — a beloved local priest — was found brutally murdered in the rectory.

“If your eyes are open around here, you can see there’s a problem. We see people struggling every day,” Cuseo said. “The town hall meeting after the murder really inspired me. So many people showed up and wanted to do something. I’m really into motorcycles, and thought it would be a nice way to get people involved. All the people involved helped in little ways, and it’s all coming together in a big way.”

Trinia said the project has involved about 20 volunteers and seven businesses.
“Not everybody involved knows everything about motorcycles,” she said. “We have people who want to help but aren’t savvy about motorcycles doing basic stuff, such as sharing the cause on social media and buying raffle tickets for their friends who like bikes. The majority of the volunteers are older men. Some are retired machinists.”

Trinia said the project initially raised over $1,200 to begin customising the motorcycle, which was originally a 1993 Honda Shadow VT600 with 7,000 miles. It was donated by a Blue Lake resident in March, and wasn’t functioning when the work began.

Beth Weissbart, a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital’s emergency department, said she and Dr. Michael Fratkin, who also works at the hospital, originally created the Humboldt Meth Abuse Awareness Project in January which currently has around 15 active members.

“Humboldt County, unfortunately, has an illness — and part of that illness is meth abuse — and it’s causing a lot of effects, including violence and poor health and wellness,” Weissbart said. “We wanted to begin a healing process. This is a community project, which needs community support. We need more members. If there are people interested in making this part of their project for giving back to the community, we’d love to have them involved.”

The motorcycle will be raffled off at the end of the “Moto Envy Show,” which will start at 4 p.m. on Aug. 16 at the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe, 440 F Street, Eureka California USA.

Raffle tickets are available for purchase at two Eureka locations: Hinterland Screen Printing, Apparel and Design at 712 Fifth St. and the Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe at 440 F St. You can also contact the Phoenix Project about buying tickets remotely, at this website: hinterland.empire@gmail.com
