Airhawk Motorcycle Seat Cushion Your Gluteus to the Maximus
If you’re one for long motorcycle rides but your motorcycle seat doesn’t satisfy your comfort needs and prevents you from going the distance you’ll find the Airhawk Motorcycle Seat Cushion the perfect answer!
Having tested the product, specifically the Cruiser Seat seating system for nearly 1000 km I can tell you most certainly it does the trick! I walked away after the long ride with no ‘derrière’ or back ache! In fact, even as I write this now, I’m sitting on my Airhawk Motorcycle Seat Cushion not on my motorcycle but on my office chair! I find its benefits useful in any situation requiring hours of sitting!
The technology was originally invented for wheelchair users; generally people who spend up to 12 hours a day seated and are at risk for painful and sometimes life-threatening pressure ulcers. Robert H. Graebe its architect, spent years developing a solution to the problem. He invented a cushion that equalized forces over the weight-bearing areas of the body, relieving dangerous pressure points.
Now known as the ROHO Group, Inc., the leading pioneer in Shape Fitting Technology® since 1973. His cushion, the ROHO®, was designed with supple interconnecting air cells to allow a patient to almost float on air. The ROHO® cushion became renowned in the medical profession, and the same patented technology was later used to create mattresses for long-term care patients and other products.
ROHO® brought DRY FLOATATION technology to the transportation and recreation industries with AIRHAWK® Comfort Seating Systems. Graebe found that DRY FLOATATION has more amazing properties than just pressure equalization.
It also controls vibration and absorbs shock where for motorcycle riders who are at the mercy of engine and road vibrations, can experience significant fatigue, numbness and even health risks such as spinal column compression as a result! It’s also been a huge success for truck drivers who spend their day strapped into the seat of an 18-wheeler!
Its design comes with two straps front and back which are intended to go under your seat to keep the cushion in place. However, I found they weren’t really necessary as the AIRHAWK® rubber underside kept if from going anywhere! I did use the front strap nonetheless, simply for peace of mind.
Initial inflation is straight forward and simple—the trick being not to over inflate! But you’ll be able to get a feel for this especially once you’ve filled it with air, and sit on it. It will be obvious enough if you’ve put too much or too little air in.
Its black colour blends into the motorcycle seat which is more good thinking on the designers part. Frankly, it’s not the most attractive accessory on your motorcycle. My preference is indeed, that it is as inconspicuous as possible.
The only challenge I observed, is that it does increase seat height and this could present a challenge on taller bikes and for shorter riders. I used it both on a Harley-Davidson Sportster which was a non issue as it’s a very short motorcycle to begin with. But when using it on the BMW F800ST it created enough height to prevent my feet from setting flat on the ground. However, it’s such a portable item you can easily place it underneath you after moving off.
