BMW F650GS Ride Review

The BMW F650GS undoubtedly has off-road written all over it and boldly embodies the spirit of adventure both on and off the beaten path. For those seeking a versatile and exhilarating ride capable of conquering any terrain, my comprehensive BMW F650GS review is poised to showcase why this motorcycle stands out as the ultimate choice.

BMW F650GS IS REALLY AN 800cc – WHY THE TRICKERY?

The F650GS has a long credible family background including a series of variations to its history. However, the 2008 iteration of the F650GS breaks tradition by boasting a displacement of 800cc rather than the expected 650cc. This departure initially puzzled me, but BMW’s engineers had a keen understanding of their target audience. Research indicated that many new riders are intimidated by larger displacement bikes. With a strategic focus on attracting younger and novice riders, including women, BMW introduced this bike to shift perceptions. Picture the agility of a 650cc combined with the robust performance of a larger engine —a truly enticing proposition. Moreover, the renowned Brembo brake system, featuring a double-piston calliper gripping a single 300 mm front disc, ensures unparalleled braking efficacy. This setup delivers more stopping power than most riders will ever require, enhancing both safety and confidence on the road.

Both the enduro models F650GS and F800GS are closely linked. The F650GS’s 800cc engine is pretty much the same as the liquid cooled F800’s twin-cylinder, but tuned to produce 71bhp versus the 800’s 84bhp giving the F650GS a GENTLER OUTPUT again for less aggressive or new riders or to handle. The bike is also meant as the successor to the old F650GS, a single cylinder 652cc capacity which was positioned as an entry level machine in the BMW line — also hugely successful.

A lowered suspension kit can be installed which reduces seat height to 765 mm/30.1 inches.

BMW is one of the very few manufacturers that have tackled our [shorter] “LADY-LIKE” in-seam by smartly offering optional seat heights (on most their models) as is the case with the F650GS. Produced with a standard seat height is 820 mm / 32.3 inches, the lower seat is 790 mm / 31.1 inches.

But that’s not the end of it; you can add the lowered suspension kit which reduces seat height to 765 mm/30.1 inches. The lower seat and lowered suspension are available at no extra charge although the suspension alteration means no centre stand.

Unlike the “gutsy” and aggressive demeanour of a race bike, the F650GS offers a distinctly different riding experience characterised by its smooth, refined, and almost serene operation. It exudes a sense of calmness, akin to the tranquillity one might find in a yoga session. This tranquil sensation is complemented by its exceptional manoeuvrability, which I attribute in part to its light weight of just 179 kilograms (calculated with a full gas tank and fluids). This combination makes it an incredible confidence booster, allowing riders to effortlessly navigate various road conditions with ease.

The F650GS gas tank is ingeniously located under the seat -fill up at the rear of the bike!

On the topic of fluids, the expected fuel consumption claim on for the F650GS is 5.2 litres per 100 km at a constant 120 km/h, dropping to 3.7 litres at 90 km/h. With a 16-litre tank you’ll get an estimated range of around 300 km per tank. Using non aggressive throttle application along with my rather light female weight range, under similar circumstances you can expect to gain 10% more mileage on that factor.

The F650GS gas tank is ingeniously located under the seat (fill up at the rear of the bike)! This indeed changes the weight/balance operation adding to the easy-feel as you might imagine. Weight has been distributed through the top centre of the bike (rather than usual tank and weight in front of you!) indeed giving a terrifically balanced feeling requiring less steering input (unlike the top-heavy complaint of other motorcycle designs)—you’ll balance the bike easily at slow speeds.

The F650GS demonstrates remarkable prowess on the highway as well.

Beyond excelling in inner city manoeuvrability, the F650GS demonstrates remarkable prowess on the highway as well. During a journey to visit my uncle, a few hours west of the city, I traversed some of Toronto’s bustling free-ways. Accelerating to highway speeds of 100 km/h (with a potential top speed of 185 km/h), the bike remained impressively stable, delivering a handling experience consistent with its performance at lower speeds. The ride was characterised by its smoothness, responsiveness, and overall comfort, making long-distance travel a breeze. However, I did notice that the discreet windscreen didn’t fully deflect the wind pressure at higher speeds, suggesting that opting for a taller windscreen would be advisable for those planning extended touring adventures.

The fitting of reputed Brembo brake system double piston calliper grips the single 300 mm front disc resulting in perfect braking efficacy. This will provide more braking ability than most riders will ever need.

Despite the lower speed limits compared to those in Europe, I couldn’t resist pushing the bike to higher speeds. Finding a safe and secluded stretch of road off the express-way, I effortlessly reached 140 km/h. To my delight, the bike handled the increased pace with ease and grace. It’s clear that this isn’t your typical 650cc machine —the power delivery is evident, particularly between 6,500 and 7,000 rpm, providing a satisfying surge of acceleration. Venturing onto countryside roads featuring a mix of grass and gravel, I found the bike to be responsive and agile, promptly reacting to throttle and brake inputs regardless of the Bridgestone tires mono-spiral tread pattern. The choice of a high-grip compound, designed for 90% road and 10% off-road travel, proves to be a smart decision, ensuring confidence-inspiring traction in diverse riding conditions.

The fitting of reputed Brembo brake system double piston calliper, grips the single 300 mm front disc resulting in perfect braking efficacy. This will provide MORE BRAKING ABILITY than most riders will ever need.

The F650GS has adjustable rear shock which is pretty much standard on motorcycles. Unlike a car we have to make adjustments to ‘load’ variations for situations of carrying a passenger or cargo.

Putting the suspension to the test, I encountered a few unavoidable pot-holes, a common nuisance on Ontario’s highways and roads. Impressively, the F650GS managed to shield me from their jarring impact, delivering minimal feedback through to my seat.

The F650GS has 41 mm forks which are not adjustable —personally not my preference. I need to make set-up fittings but that’s simply the level my skills are accustom to. This choice however, does make sense for the average rider where many seldom get into managing suspension set ups. Easy!

It might be that as accustomed as I am still to the higher European highway speed limits, I might be same the same to European pricing- totally amazed at the F650GS’s reasonable price tag! A mere CAD9,490. But that’s the “suggested” retail price. You’re likely to find it for less.
