Cardo PACKTALK EDGE In-Helmet Communication System Review

Rider-to-rider in-helmet communication systems have become immensely popular.  And like all technology, these devices have seen rapid improvements in their quality and ability. While riders like myself, ride for the solitary nature motorcycling offers, there are many – including those with passengers – who prefer riding with others for a more “shared” riding experience. And then features such as obtaining navigation instructions, traffic updates, listening to music or guiding other riders around the pothole ahead have made these devices popular. Despite all the advantages, I’ve made it a practise to encourage riders to minimalize use of in-helmet comms in order to fully focus on the road.  Now,  in testing out Cardo’s latest tech – the Cardo PACKTALK EDGE with handsfree Voice Commands and quick on/off air mount – I’m in!  PACKTALK EDGE, you had me at –  “Hey, Cardo . . . “!

PIONEERING IN-HELMET COMMS

My riding preferences are to experience motorcycling at its rawest, purist form.  So, no, I have chosen not to ride with an in-helmet comms system. No music, no phone calls just the road ahead.  In fact, I had one of the first systems in the late 80’s and used the set for training at my school in St. Maarten. I manage navigations via my TomTom Rider motorcycle GPS  with its huge bright screen and on shorter rides, my iPhone in its handlebar cradle. All visual inputs. And, every in-helmet system I’ve used has been notoriously fidgety, difficult to operate, low battery life and with inconsistent connectivity. Plus, the attention I needed to use these devices took up way to much of my time.

Admittedly, a lot has changed over the past decade(s) – the PACKTALK EDGE has proven that to me. Here are my favourite features below.

Cardo PACKTALK EDGE | Favourite Features

FAVOURITE FEATURES:

  • Easy Setup and In-Helmet Installation. I set up the PACKTALK EDGE onto my full-face Arai and was ready to go within an hour.
  • Air Mount. PACKTALK EDGE Duo Magnetic Cradle. One of main features of the Edge, and – its magnetic attachment to your helmet. The helmet cradle is magnetic and nearly hops out of the hand onto cradle! And removal is easy. Just push down on the forward-facing front of the unit and the Edge slides right off.
  • Cardo Voice Command. Never need to push a button again! “Hey Cardo” initiates commands by voice to switch to radio, or music playlists, volume up, down etc. This is the feature I absolutely adored!  Quick needs, no fidgeting with buttons and hands on the grips/controls for safer riding.
  • WATERPROOF. Yes! This is excellent as I teach, ride and tour in rain conditions.
  • DMC 2nd generation. This makes for amazing crystal-clear wideband intercom sound. In case you’re wondering the difference between Gen2 and Gen1 is its significantly improvement on ease of use and lightning-fast pairing process.
  • Battery Life. 13 hours or PACKTALK time is incredible. My iPhone 13 Pro battery drained long before the PACKTALK EDGE did.
  • Control buttons – sensitive and easy to use wearing gloves.
  • Amazing Sound. JBL speakers provide a magnificent sound experience.
  • Bluetooth 5.2. This is the most advanced Bluetooth chip in the market. It enables the integration of the latest audio technologies and significantly improves the quality of the Intercom. Bluetooth 5.2 is also more efficient and more secure, it offers faster pairing capabilities, as well as longer battery life.
  • Fast charge.
  • Full Compatibility. Works with all DMC products and connects to all Cardo units using regular Bluetooth pairing.
  • Over-The-Air Software updates.
  • Fifteen riders at a range of up to 1.6km/1 mile. Nice feature but I didn’t get the chance to test.
  • Cardo app. Super easy to setup and connected to my iPhone 13 Pro immediately upon every start-up.
  • Audio/Music. Plays music, radio stations – any audio selected from my iPhone perfectly.
  • Activates Siri on my iPhone 95% of the time.

ABOUT DYNAMIC MESH & BLUE TOOTH

Cardo Systems launched the world’s first motorcycle communicator in 2015, when to go beyond Bluetooth, with its introduction of Dynamic Mesh Communication (DMC). The state-of-the-art technology means the devices function with a self-adjusting network that not only automatically maintains a connection between up to 15 riders, but allows them to seamlessly join, leave and rejoin.
DMC is a huge feature of the PACKTALK EDGE allowing for distances of up to 3.08kms or 10,000 feet (1.9 miles) and will automatically join and re-connect to existing intercom riders /groups!

HOW DOES MESH INTERCOM WORK?

Cardo PACKTALK EDGE Review- MOTORESS
How Does Mesh Intercom Work?

There are now two in-helmet motorcycle intercom technologies: Bluetooth and mesh.

Both these technologies use radio frequencies to wirelessly connect riders together. However, Bluetooth only sends data up to two direct connections, meaning one rider can only connect directly to two others. It offers good range, and it remains present in all intercoms for connections to phones and satellite navigators, but when pairing more than two riders together (four is usually the maximum) and to accommodate larger numbers in a group, a “daisy chain” is created to make the connections.

Furthermore, the challenge with the Bluetooth method is that if one member in the middle of the group drops out, the whole group falls apart.  Plus, Bluetooth communications are limited to about 800 metres or half a mile, but Mesh Bluetooth technology enables each headset to act as a node, relaying the signal to the next headset, extending the range.

Mesh network adaptors can act as repeaters, extending the range farther, and connect to mobile phones. If a rider leaves the coverage area – say gets stuck behind a vehicle and separated from the group, the headset will automatically reconnect when the rider re-enters. You could sum it up by saying mesh creates a web of connecting links between everyone in the group and since the mesh is self healing, allows riders to change order within the group or leave it altogether without disrupting the rest of the group.

HELMET FITTING AND MOUNTING

From unpacking, downloading the iPhone Cardo app,  following the PACKTALK EDGE Installation Guide (included) I had the PACKTALK EDGE fitted and functioning on my helmet within an hour! Remarkable!

It will instal on a full face, open face and flip up helmet.

PACKTALK EDGE HELMET FITTING AND MOUNTING

Everything is in the box for mounting on each of these styles times two (Duo set). For the open face and flip up helmets – the boom mic is used, and for the full-face, a smaller stick-on mic is mounted on the inside of your chin piece.

Fitting the pair of 40mm JBL internal speakers is simple and easy especially as most helmets having internal ear space cut-outs right at the ear area -as was the case with my Arai. The speakers attach seamlessly with strong Velcro directly to the helmet inner pads. This is great if you need to adjust just lift and move.

What’s In The Box – PACKTALK EDGE DUO

In my case I installed the clip-on mount for the PACKTALK EDGE cradle as I could remove the PACKTALK EDGE cradle to another helmet. The adhesive cradle mount naturally is more permanent.

*Remember the mounting is to the left side of helmet! Use is with your clutch hand and your throttle hand uninterrupted for constant speed.

EDGE MAGNETISM: AIR MOUNT

This is my second favourite feature aside from the voice operation – the PACKTALK EDGE’s “air mount” magnetic mounting system! With magnets fitted in the device and the cradle, the PACKTALK EDGE unit nearly hops out of your hand and locks securely into place. And not to worry, it is solidly in place! To remove it from your helmet, apply a focused press the front of the bracket while sliding the device forward and out. Easy!

CARDO APP: CONNECTING AND SYNCING

After all is unpacked, and you’ve charged up the unit, you’ll update software by way of the Cardo app. The Cardo app for iPhone is at the app store and Android via Google play both free to download.  You do need to create an account and pair your Cardo to your phone and/or your GPS. It is easy and straightforward with ample Cardo instructions both online and in the user guide provided.

Another feature is within the Cardo app, you have the full user guide on your smartphone. So whenever in a new situation arises where you want to use a feature you’re not well versed on, you’ve got the steps to make it happen.

And as soon as you turn your unit on – you’re connected. It is incredibly fast and instinctive is incredibly fast pairing almost as the intercom is turned on.

CARDO PACKTALK EDGE SET UP

After connecting, I set up all my preferences using the app. Also, I created a group to add riders who will eventually join me on a ride. I set up my audio preferences – such things as “sensitivity” and volume adjusts depending on ambient noise.

VOICE OPERATION & PAIRING

This is my favourite feature by far and as I see it a must have feature for an in-helmet comms system! The voice commands remove the need to take hands from motorcycle handlebar controls to fidget with the device operation. Once the specific Cardo voice command vocabulary is learned the ease of control is heavenly.  You’ll connect or pair easily to your smartphone, GPS, use intercom between riders, or share music.

The PACKTALK EDGE responds instantly, clearly and the follow through is fabulous! And whatever Cardo cannot make happen, Siri can.

“Hey, Cardo, . . .”

I recommend as a backup, teach yourself the button controls. Occasionally, I had forgotten the specific Cardo Voice command and needed to take over with the hand controls.  The owner’s manual provides straight forward step-by-step instructions for private chats, group phone calls, music sharing etc. And because there are but three buttons and one “control roller wheel” – but the way, great concept as is so easy to operate with your gloved hand!  The best method is to practise each feature and memorise the button sequences/ operational times. What worked for me is tackling one feature at a time – with repetitive practise.

EAR PLUGS AND HEARING CARDO

Most motorcyclists ride with earplugs – a good and important practise to protect your hearing from wind damage as well as prevent fatigue on longer rides. I tested my PACKTALK EDGE without earplugs, while my rider friend did wear ear plugs. He shared that indeed it was easier to hear when the earplugs (for protection – not phone “earbuds”) were removed. I discovered after our ride, adjustments in both the Cardo audio and smartphone system can be tweaked to provide improvements here. There are also factors such as speaker location and mic location to consider.

CONNECTS TO EARLIER GEN CARDOS

The PACKTALK EDGE has the option of shifting from Mesh to Bluetooth to enable linking with other non-Mesh enabled units (even non-Cardo brands). As mentioned earlier the DMC (Dynamic Mesh Communication) has many superior features particularly in groups or riders becoming out of range and re-entering range. Mesh connection heals immediately, and automatically while Bluetooth requires some action on the part of the user. Truly,  DMC requires little action overall, and it is great that Bluetooth is included for those rider friends who have not DMC- yet.

EDGE DIFFERENCE vs. EARLIER MODELS

The PACKTALK EDGE offers five improved key features:

  • Air Mount. a completely revolutionary, simple, and secure magnetic mount.
  • DMC 2nd Generation: lightning-fast pairing and a crystal-clear wideband intercom voice
  • A complete Redesigned Sound System by JBL an American audio equipment manufacturer- owned by Harman International and is the undisputed leader of Bluetooth speakers claiming their name on a consistent level of quality with waterproofing, solid features, and reliable performance.
  • Improved Natural Voice Operation with an enhanced noise-filtering microphone.
  • Bluetooth 5.2
  • Power PACKTALK EDGE features in addition:
    • Fast charging.
    • A robust USB Type-C port

IS THE PACKTALK EDGE FOR YOU?

  • Yes, you will love the PACKTALK EDGE. It’s the complete package. It is Cardo’s most current Cardo model and the only one with the Air Mount. Even if  you generally ride with one other, you can still connect easily with other riders should your group expand.
  • All PACKTALK models -the Edge, Neo (formerly the Bold) and Slim have DMC and Bluetooth technology. The EDGE and the NEO have the most similar features, but the EDGE has a further range, Second Generation DMC, a three-year warranty and of course the amazing new fast Air Mount.
  • Cost. The PACKTALK EDGE DUO is a MSRP of CAD$720.96 / US$699.95US / EU699,95; SINGLE has an MSRP of CAD$498.43 / US$389.95 / EU389,95
  • The final question? If you are new to in-helmet comms, ask yourself is this something you can manage? And I mean this in the sense of managing your ride, the risks around you and now –  audio [distraction] in your helmet. Your riding skills and technique need to be at a confident level to take on the added diversion an in-helmet system will require.

WRAP UP: THE VERDICT

Remarkable – get one! The PACKTALK EDGE is Cardo’s newest and most sophisticated communication system.  The voice operation feature is the main game changer for me. Though this feature has been in place since 2018,  this definitely makes it safer than others. Hands on the controls and no fumbling with buttons while voice instructions access the Cardo app or Siri /Google.  Fused with the magnetic mounting makes the EDGE incredibly efficient!  More time riding, less time fidgeting with gear. And the cradle mount clip allows me to move the unit easily to my other helmets or during training sessions – to a rider’s helmet. Its excellent range, outstanding JBL speaker quality – total combined features make it a sort of “superpower” in-helmet comms.

Note that I’ve not changed my professional view that distraction exists to the rider using an in-helmet comms. There needs to be a measure of caution – such as when to use and when to mute.  Distracted driving remains one of the leading cause of crashes for vehicles in general. And all this technology is – distracting. It takes focus from the road. It only takes a split-second to lose focus and as we all know, for a motorcyclist that can be deadly.

All in all, the PACKTALK EDGE Duo is a huge enhancer to the motorcycle training and lessons I’ll provide. And when needed, I’ll enjoy listening to traffic and route directions all by hands-free activation.
I won’t be giving up the solitary riding pleasures I seek from motorcycling – the engine revs, the auditory notes of my Akrapovič, and sounds from the surroundings I ride amidst. Nevertheless, the PACKTALK EDGE will be there, on my helmet ready to offer me its astounding features when I choose to hear them.
It remains something I can control and will only be as intruding as I allow it to be.
Hey Cardo,  . . . mute audio.”

TIPS

  • Buy extra Velcro stick-on mounts. I discovered-  as I have more than one helmet and will connect/instal to rider helmets (training) who do not own a Cardo– extra Velcro pads, both circular and rectangle will be handy. These you can find anywhere for little cost.
  • Order extra helmet mounting clips. These makes installing the device cradle super easy on a multitude of helmets – your passenger, or for your other helmet.
  • Be sure to tweak audio levels before you ride. And if receiving directions from your smartphone equally important to adjust volumes. When I was on expressway rides I discovered my initial settings were not quite high enough to hear well. Put your helmet on at home and test. Even with the automatic audio adjusts, for me it was still
