BMW Motorrad has expanded its Heritage range with the introduction of the exhilarating BMW R 12 S, a contemporary motorcycle that seamlessly blends classic styling with modern performance. Built to evoke the spirit of the legendary 1973 R 90 S, with its 67 hp and a top speed of 200 km/h, the R 12 S delivers a thrilling ride experience with its powerful engine, refined handling, and premium features.
The new BMW R 12 S, inspired by the Concept Ninety unveiled in 2013, captures the essence of the R 90 S while seamlessly integrating it into the modern era. Built on the R 12 nineT platform, it embodies an authentic retro-sport aesthetic with numerous design cues paying tribute to its predecessor.
BMW R 90 S: Racing Legend

Designed by Hans A. Muth, the R 90 S embodied a pioneering spirit. It featured a handlebar fairing with aerodynamic considerations and a striking red “90” on the engine, making it the first production motorcycle to incorporate these design elements. Racing success further solidified the R 90 S’s iconic status, with victories at events like the Isle of Man TT and the Daytona 200.
“The R 12 S features defining elements like the handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing with a tinted windshield, a contrasting seat, and the Lavaorange metallic paint finish, echoing the legendary Daytona Orange of the 1975 R 90 S,” explains Alexander Buckan,

Head of BMW Motorrad Design. “These elements are complemented by details such as the red ‘S’ on the side covers, the red double line, and the brushed and clear-lacquered aluminium surfaces of the tank and seat hump.”
High-End Standard Equipment
The R 12 S comes standard with a host of premium features, including the Option 719 Classic II wheels with wire spokes and shiny, naturally anodised aluminium rims. Black handlebars and fork tubes, along with Billet packs Shadow and Shadow II, add a touch of sophistication. The Comfort Package, featuring Hill Start Control, Shift Assistant Pro, Heated Grips, and Cruise Control, enhances rider comfort. For improved nighttime visibility, the adaptive cornering light Headlight Pro enhances road illumination in curves.

Extensive Customisation Options
As the R 12 S is based on the R 12 nineT, a wide range of accessories, including titanium exhaust systems, soft bags, and navigation preparation, are available. Owners can further personalise their motorcycles with options like a short rear end, a black license plate holder, Tire Pressure Control (RDC), Anti-Theft Alarm System (DWA), Intelligent Emergency Call, Connected Ride Control, and a digital display with a micro-TFT screen as an alternative to the classic round instruments.
