Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello Ride Review

This is the Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello, and I’ve been eagerly waiting to get my hands on one. You see, it marks a huge shift for Moto Guzzi, a brand that has recently focused on old-school, air-cooled, retro-style bikes. With the V100, however, they’ve created something thoroughly modern, featuring an all-new engine, top-spec components, and the latest techy gizmos. The general word on the road on this model has been overwhelmingly positive.  Some reviewers have even called it the best bike they’ve ridden in 2023.  So, did it meet expectations? Read on!

I’ll be honest, my acquaintance with the Moto Guzzi brand has been limited. However, delving into the 2023 Moto Guzzi V100, it’s evident that this represents a remarkable stride forward for the esteemed Italian manufacturer.  Seamlessly intertwining timeless heritage with state-of-the-art innovation, the V100 is full of distinctive character. The moment I sat in the seat and accelerated away –  I realised that this was something incredibly unlike anything I’d ridden. I  was struck by the Moto Guzzi magic.

Moto Guzzi V100 Fact Bite

Production of the V100 commenced in Mandello del Lario in 2022. Its introduction was first revealed in September 2021, followed by an official presentation on November 23, 2021, during the 78th edition of EICMA in Milan. The moniker “V100” carries a dual significance, referencing both its engine displacement of around 1000 cm³ and commemorating the manufacturer’s centenary in 2021.

Then, in the ‘golden years’ of the 1950s, by which time Guzzi was Italy’s largest bike manufacturer, its Mandello factory had expanded to cover over 24,000sqm, employed over 1500 and included the world’s first motorcycle wind tunnel, it won five consecutive 350cc GP world crowns. Highlight Features V100

  • Liquid cooling, first time for a Moto Guzzi model.
  • New clutch with anti-hopping slipper action

  • Impressive handling
  • Cruise Control
  • Exhaust provides unique tones.
  • Full-LED lighting.
  • Advanced electronics & Four Riding Modes

The V100 Mandello embodies a century’s worth of innovation.

Deflectors Offer Adaptive Aerodynamics

This is the big talking point on the V100 – the new adaptive aerodynamic speed-adjustable deflectors. These flaps per Moto Guzzi which  extend from the upper front sides of the fuel-tank are a groundbreaking feature in the motorcycle industry.  With rider comfort in mind, these deflectors pivot outward to about a 30-degree angle, redirecting airflow around the lower parts of the rider and passenger, while the rider-controlled electronically adjustable windscreen takes care of upper torso protection. These winglets come into action in two of the bike’s four ride modes — Tour and Rain – with a minimum speed requirement of 70 kph (around 45 mph). Their deployment speed is customisable, you can edit the speed or switch them off in certain modes via the editing menu.  In the other two modes, Sport and Road, the deflectors remain flush against the tank. I can’t say out on the road that I noticed a huge amount of difference between them being out or in.

Tech Features Help You Ride Better

TFT Display Easy on The Eyes

Moto Guzzi has made a big push on Tech with this model I found the traction control a great feature and thankfully you can switch it off in any mode. The throttle response is nice, and it does remember your settings when you switch it off  and back on again. It gives you a nice safety message to remind you there’s also cruise control as standard. The V100 S model gets a quick shifter and heated grips.

The V100 Mandello embodies a century’s worth of innovation, featuring a Ride by Wire electronic throttle with four Riding Modes, a 6-axis inertial platform, ABS cornering for exceptional braking performance both on straightaways and through corners, Cruise Control, a 5-inch colour TFT display, and Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 semi-active suspension. Additionally, Moto Guzzi MIA, the system that links your smartphone to your bike, enhances every ride, making it more gratifying than ever before.*Ohlins suspension only available on the S version

Adjustable Windscreen

I enjoyed having the electronic windscreen in the down position — it gives me a sensation akin to riding a naked bike, with plenty of wind blast for that exhilarating feel. Then, when it gets too intense, simply raising it provides adequate protection and a bit more comfort along express-ways and strong headwinds.  Surprisingly, despite its seemingly modest size, it offers excellent wind coverage across the body and up to about the neck, making for a comfortable ride.

What Mode Are You?

SPORT mode is designed for a more dynamic use of the vehicle. The throttle response is rapid, engine braking and traction control are minimally invasive.

ROAD mode is designed for urban use. Engine response is less aggressive and engine braking is more invasive than in SPORT mode, while traction control is set to the intermediate level.

TOUR mode is designed for a touristic use of the vehicle. The engine response is less aggressive, the engine brake and traction control are set to the intermediate level.

RAIN mode is intended for use on surfaces with poor traction. The engine response is mild, the engine brake is efficient, and the traction control is set to the maximum level.

Brakes For Stoppable Moments

Considering the mass of the V100, these stoppers are amazingly progressive and strong. The braking system on the V100 exudes sportiness, boasting a duo of four-piston radially mounted Brembo callipers upfront, complemented by a Brembo radial master cylinder at the lever. This means, light touch for maximum results.  While it may seem repetitive to lavish more praise on Brembo brakes, the truth remains undeniable.

Full LED Lighting

One of the many standard features that are anything, but standard is the full-LED lighting package with cornering lights for improved visibility and safety. The tail-light is also LED, while the DRLs trace the unmistakable form of the iconic Moto Guzzi eagle.

The V100’s remarkable gel seat is truly a game-changer –so much so, I’m writing a paragraph about it! I’ve never experienced anything quite like it! The sit comfort entices one to ride forever. Firm support and mega cushioning made every moment an absolute pleasure.

Sport Tourer / Roadster

Those anticipating a somewhat minimalist touring bike might find the accommodations, for both rider and passenger, somewhat lacking. However, those envisioning a slightly more comfortable naked bike will likely be satisfied. Yet again, touring and riding preferences are subjective. In my opinion, the V100 unquestionably excels as a long-distance tourer.

The V100 Mandello has a unique appearance. It has a simple and clean look. The back end, exhaust pipe, windscreen, and front fender are all short, giving the bike a strong and muscular appearance. There’s one long piece of bodywork that runs from near the headlight to under the seat, which looks strange but stylish.

The reason I believe the V100 stands out is because it’s not trying to imitate anything else; it’s just being itself.  It doesn’t have the rugged, semi-off-road appearance of an adventure bike, nor does it feature sharp, angular lines typical of a sport bike. It doesn’t seem to follow any particular style trend.

Lowlights:

  • Noticeable heat at low speeds.
  • Quick-shifter occasionally misses shifts.
  • Throttle and suspension settings in Sport mode can feel somewhat harsh.

The Guzzi V100 is genuine and sincere. Beyond its quirky little winglets, it provides an intuitive riding experience.

Conclusion:

The V100 is easy to manoeuvre, striking a perfect balance and feeling incredibly intuitive. It’s a great fit for seasoned rider. It’s responsive without being overly sensitive, providing ample feedback from the front end. It is a pleasant experience, yet it also packs enough punch to keep things exciting.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Moto Guzzi, but riding the V100 took my admiration to a whole new level. Its performance captivated me completely — I couldn’t resist its allure, and I’d jump at the chance to call one my own. It feels like a bike crafted by people who prioritised their own riding desires over market trends. The Guzzi V100 is genuine and sincere. Beyond its quirky little winglets, it provides an intuitive riding experience. It’s both one-of-a-kind and incredibly fitting, with the most comfortable seat I never wanted to leave.
