Five Essential Motorcycle Tools

Every motorcycle “tool kit to success” is best equipped with good quality basic useful “for motorcycle”
tools. And often this is a bigger learning curve as a woman motorcycle rider who may have never owned any tools – ever!  I highlighted those particular tools in my earlier article Motorcycle Tool Box Basics Part I: Just Starting Out. However, if you’re up to performing a few more tasks, here are the top five must have motorcycle tools which will save you money! They’ll assist you in performing more complex works such as replacing your chain or changing your oil.

Tip: Be sure to invest in quality tools from the start. If you buy the bargain brands you’ll be back to the shop in no time for replacements.

Five Essential Motorcycle Tools

  1. Torque Wrench: A torque wrench ensures you apply the exact amount of “torque” to a nut or bolt. Its internal mechanism allows for precise adjustments, preventing over-tightening and the risk of breaking bolts. It’s a must-have for keeping your bike in top condition.
  2. Oil Filter Wrench:  Motorcycle oil filters are often difficult to grip, especially when old and tightened by oil pressure. A dedicated oil filter wrench is designed to handle spin-on filters, making it easier to remove them without damage.
  3. Chain Splitting and Riveting Set: A chain splitting and riveting set is an investment that pays off in no time. Being able to replace your chain yourself can save you a lot of money, and a quality set ensures the job is done properly.
  4. Tap and Die Set:  Stripped threads or snapped studs are unfortunate but common issues. A tap and die set allows you to repair them, saving you from costly repairs and keeping your bike running smoothly.
  5. Socket or Ratchet Set: A versatile socket or ratchet set is indispensable for a wide range of repairs. The 3/8 inch wrench drive is ideal for most tasks, with common socket sizes including 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, and 20 mm. Don’t forget the larger 27 or 32 mm sockets for axle nuts.

And with those dollars saved, perhaps a new motorcycle jacket?
