MotoGP Night Racing in Qatar Makes Debut

This coming weekend is very special with regard to the MotoGP motorcycle racing sport. It’s race one of the exciting MotoGP season, but it’s the first ever night race in the sports history. A Grand Prix historic happening making this performance the first of its kind – night racing in Qatar.

This history-making illumination is powered by over five million watts of electricity representing the largest permanent sports lighting system in the world. That’s very exciting! Qatar’s 5.380 kilometre / 3.343 mile circuit has lit practise laps for the past two nights rider testing sessions as well as yesterday’s first qualification practices. Sunday’s race will be one to watch.

MotoGP Night Racing in Qatar Blinding Lights

The lights have presented new challenges to the riders, the teams and of course television crews and photographers—at least the atrocious heat of the desert won’t be a challenging reason this time for both rider and tire wear.

Enjoy the photos sent by Dutch Arie Molenaar Motors / De Graaf Racing Team press release. Owner Arie Molenaar, a terrific fellow in which I’ve had the chance to know and, better yet, observe in action within the MotoGP paddock. This was often the case when MotoGP was in town for its Assen venue and during Sachsenring MotoGP’s. Molenaar was the same team Katja Poensgen raced on before retiring from racing.
Ah, the colours of the night!
